Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
The birth of DuVernay's daughter occurred on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise at the age of a small kid. The aunt was on the night shifts as a nursing assistant so she could follow her passion of theater and literature during the day. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay learned by example that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay's mother also had a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay lived in Compton for most of her life, but spent every summer in the company of her extended family members in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. As studying, DuVernay became interested in producing for the broadcast media. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of a member of the jury and examine their junk. As a result of her work she was dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio following her graduation from college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. In addition to PR, the company established several lifestyle platforms like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
